"The Culver City High School AVPA program received a grant from the Culver City Arts Foundation for $5,000 in the winter of 2019 to help support a production at the Kirk Douglas Theatre. After 10 years of annual gala productions at the KDT, AVPA presented a multi-discipline collaboration show at the KDT in February of 2019. In order to allow more students and family members to attend, the ticket price was kept at a reasonable level because of this grant.

The unique relationships created by making art across disciplines brings together students in ways not found at many high schools. AVPA gives students a creative outlet to reach beyond traditional performances and explore original ideas. For example, visual artists created paintings on the stage while jazz musicians improvised around them. Dancers improvised choreography to improvised musicians. Film created work for theatre students to respond to live on stage. What our students experience will impact them for a lifetime, whether or not they pursue arts as a career. Arts education isn’t about creating better artists – it’s about making people better. It’s because of the support of Culver Arts that our students could perform in a world-class venue and that friends and family could attend with affordable ticket prices.
